A birthday celebration takes an unexpected turn when a rural Irish family confronts their sister’s relationship with a refugee. Fierce, funny and deeply human, ADRIFT is a compelling contemporary family drama exploring the psychology of fear, the rise of anti-immigrant sentiment and Ireland’s complex relationship with emigration.
Written by acclaimed Irish playwright Deirdre Kinahan, whose celebrated works include OUTRAGE, The Saviour, An Old Song Half Forgotten, TEMPESTA, The Unmanageable Sisters, Rathmines Road, Moment and Halcyon Days, ADRIFT brings the heated debates shaping our society into that most familiar of settings: the Irish family kitchen.
With her trademark wit, warmth and humanity, Kinahan explores the contradictions at the heart of modern Ireland, challenging audiences to consider how fear takes hold, where prejudice comes from and what happens when deeply held beliefs collide around the family table.
Featuring a stellar cast and directed by acclaimed theatre director Marc Atkinson Borrull (An Ideal Husband, Gate Theatre; Three Sisters, Dublin Theatre Festival; and Kinahan’s Tempesta, Cork Midsummer Festival and Glassmask Theatre), ADRIFT promises an honest, thought-provoking and unsettling night at the theatre.
